Chandigarh: Vijaypal Singh, President of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), issued a strong statement condemning Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla and the BJP over the allegations raised during the Municipal Corporation meeting. He said the Mayor’s letter to the Punjab Governor and UT Administrator is unconstitutional and unauthorized. Singh stated that the letter is being used as a pressure tactic to suppress opposition councillors and protect BJP’s corruption agenda.
Vijaypal Singh highlighted that on 30 September, AAP and Congress councillors raised critical issues affecting Chandigarh residents, including broken roads, delays in development projects, and lack of transparency. These actions are the democratic duty of elected representatives. In retaliation, the Mayor allegedly misused her authority by involving marshals to obstruct the democratic rights of opposition councillors, whenever the Mayor feels threatened, she sends marshals forward. Subsequently, she wrote to the Governor/Administrator demanding immediate action, which is beyond her constitutional powers.
AAP clarified that funds allocated for road construction are being misused while the roads remain incomplete. The party plans to renovate V3, V5, and V6 roads, but the BJP Mayor is reportedly blocking these projects, thereby stalling development.
Furthermore, in the rush to expedite the auction of Manimajra land, all informal and unconstitutional methods were employed, which raises serious questions about hidden motives (“something fishy”). AAP councillors opposed these efforts and other irregularities in projects such as community centers and parking allocations, in defense of public interest.
The party also expressed concern over misleading and false details recorded in the official minutes prepared by the Mayor’s office. AAP has demanded access to all audio and video recordings to ensure transparency and reveal the actual sequence of events to the public. Singh emphasized that the letter sent to the Governor/Administrator holds no legal authority to take action against any councillor; any such step would be unconstitutional and biased.
AAP has urged Mayor Babla to publicly apologize and resign if she cannot substantiate her claims. The party has reiterated its demand for a free, impartial, and time-bound inquiry, and stated that all legal remedies will be pursued if wrongdoing is confirmed.
Vijaypal Singh assured the public that raising legitimate questions is not a crime but the duty of elected representatives. He reaffirmed that AAP remains committed to transparency, democracy, and citizen welfare and will continue to expose any attempts to undermine these principles.
