“Ex-DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar sent to five-day CBI remand in bribery case.”
Mohali: Former Punjab DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar, who was arrested in a bribery case, has been sent to five-day CBI remand. During the hearing on Saturday, the Chandigarh CBI Court approved the remand, following the agency’s application filed on Friday seeking his custody.
Bhullar’s lawyers, H.S. Dhanoha and R.P.S. Bara, opposed the remand plea. However, the CBI argued that more evidence needed to be collected, prompting the court to grant its request.
Meanwhile, on Friday, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau also filed a petition in the Mohali court seeking Bhullar’s production warrant in a separate disproportionate assets case. The court has listed the matter for hearing on Monday and directed the CBI to file its reply. The Vigilance Bureau had registered this case against Bhullar on October 31.
The CBI’s counsel, responding to the Vigilance Bureau’s plea, stated that the vigilance had only registered a disproportionate assets case and that there was no need for remand merely to examine properties, as the bureau could question Bhullar anytime.
During the Chandigarh court appearance, Bhullar’s daughter was also present. As he was being escorted out, Bhullar embraced his daughter and spoke to her briefly before being taken to the court lock-up.
The CBI had registered the case three days earlier, on October 29, accusing Bhullar of amassing assets disproportionate to his known sources of income in collusion with unidentified individuals. The complaint stated that Bhullar failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the wealth he possessed.
