Continuous heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh has triggered widespread devastation across several regions. Late last night, a massive cloudburst struck the Dharampur area in Mandi district, causing unprecedented destruction.
According to initial reports, nearly 20 buses belonging to Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC), which were parked at the Dharampur bus stand, were swept away in the powerful water currents. Along with the buses, several private vehicles and nearby shops were also washed away or severely damaged.
Authorities have confirmed that 6 to 7 people are currently reported missing in the aftermath of this disaster. Rescue operations are underway, with State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local police, and district administration teams working on war footing to locate the missing persons and provide assistance to those affected.
The preliminary assessment suggests that the financial loss caused by the cloudburst runs into crores of rupees, given the extensive damage to public transport property, private vehicles, and commercial establishments.

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of more heavy rainfall in the coming days, raising concerns of further landslides, flash floods, and road blockages in the hill state. Residents of low-lying and vulnerable areas have been advised to remain alert and shift to safer locations.
Local eyewitnesses described the scene as “a nightmare,” with gushing water and debris engulfing everything in its path within minutes. The sound of vehicles being dragged away by the floodwaters shook the entire region.
The state government has assured immediate relief measures and compensation for the affected families, while Chief Minister’s Office is closely monitoring the situation.
This tragic incident in Dharampur once again highlights the increasing vulnerability of Himalayan states to climate-related disasters, particularly during the monsoon season.
