Washington/Beijing: In a significant development for U.S.–China relations on TikTok Deal, President Donald Trump on Friday revealed that a deal has been struck over TikTok’s operations in the United States. The announcement came shortly after a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, during which both leaders also agreed on reciprocal visits in the coming months.
According to Trump, the TikTok deal agreement will allow the platform to continue operating in the U.S. under a framework ensuring American oversight. The deal reportedly grants U.S. entities majority control of TikTok’s American board and direct authority over the platform’s powerful recommendation algorithm — a key concern for Washington’s national security agencies. Oracle and other U.S. firms are expected to play a role in data storage and operational safeguards.
The call between Trump and Xi went beyond TikTok, touching on sensitive global issues including the fentanyl crisis, bilateral trade, and the ongoing Ukraine war. Trump said Xi expressed a “desire for peace” in Ukraine and showed willingness to address concerns over Chinese exports of fentanyl precursors.
Trump confirmed that he and Xi will meet face-to-face at the APEC Summit in South Korea on October 31–November 1, followed by a “surprise” official visit to China in early 2026. In turn, Xi is also expected to visit the U.S. “at an appropriate time.”
The deal marks a potential turning point in a long-running dispute over TikTok, which had faced the threat of an outright ban in the U.S. under the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act. While the agreement eases immediate concerns, questions remain over the extent of ByteDance’s future role and the durability of safeguards against foreign influence.
Implications:
- TikTok remains available for millions of American users, avoiding a looming shutdown.
- The agreement may set a precedent for how Washington handles foreign-owned tech platforms.
- The planned Trump–Xi summits could signal a cautious reset in U.S.–China relations.
As negotiations continue, lawmakers and security analysts are closely watching how the framework is implemented — and whether it can truly balance digital freedom with national security.
