Early detection of cancer is the key to saving lives. Many cancers can be treated successfully if found at an early stage. To make this possible, the Punjab government has started using AI-enabled screening devices in eight districts. These devices are portable, safe, and can be used even in small clinics or health camps.
Punjab’s Latest Health Initiative
- Punjab is introducing radiation-free, AI-based devices for screening.
- For breast cancer, the device Thermalytix (by Niramai) will be used.
- For cervical cancer, Smart Scope (by Periwinkle) will help doctors check patients.
- For eye health, portable autorefractometers (by Forus Health) will be used.
- Together, these devices will allow 300 breast and cervical screenings daily and nearly 600 vision screenings every day.
This is one of the largest projects of its kind in India.
Why Early Detection of Cancer is Important
- According to reports, Punjab recorded 42,288 new cancer cases in 2024, which is 7% higher than the previous year.
- Sadly, only 0.3% of women between 30-49 years have ever been screened for breast cancer, and only 2.4% for cervical cancer. This shows a big gap in preventive healthcare.
- Most patients go to the doctor only when symptoms become serious. By then, treatment becomes difficult and costly.
- With these devices, cancer can be detected early, giving patients a better chance of recovery.
How the Program Works
- The devices will be used in eight districts of Punjab to cover both rural and urban areas.
- Health workers will be trained to operate these portable tools and guide patients for further treatment if needed.
- The program is being run with the help of ACT Grants, Niramai, Periwinkle, and Forus Health.
- According to Punjab’s Health Minister, Dr. Balbir Singh, this project will bring prevention and early detection to the front line of healthcare.
Benefits of Devices for detection of Cancer
- Portable and radiation-free – Can be carried to villages and small towns without the need for big machines.
- Affordable – Helps reduce costs for patients who cannot pay for expensive tests.
- Faster results – AI tools can give screening results quickly, which helps in timely referrals.
- More awareness – Regular screenings will encourage people to get checked even before symptoms appear.
Challenges to Overcome
- Proper training of staff is needed to make sure devices are used correctly.
- People must be encouraged to come forward for screening, as fear and stigma often stop them.
- After detection, proper treatment and follow-up care must also be made available.
If these challenges are managed well, Punjab’s initiative can become a model for other states in India.
