Fake Signature Controversy Escalates
Chandigarh: The controversy over the alleged fake signatures of 10 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs on Rajya Sabha nomination papers in Punjab has taken a dramatic turn. On Tuesday, Ropar (Rupnagar) police reached Chandigarh to arrest Navneet Chaturvedi, a Jaipur resident who had filed the disputed nomination.
However, the situation grew tense when Chandigarh Police intervened and provided Chaturvedi with security, leading to a standoff between the two forces.
Police Teams Draw Guns During Confrontation
According to reports, a heated argument broke out between the Punjab and Chandigarh police teams near Sukhna Lake. Eyewitnesses claimed that, at one point, pistols were even drawn at each other.
Following the confrontation, Chandigarh Police took Chaturvedi to their headquarters and deployed additional security outside the premises.
AAP Alleges VIP Protection for Accused
Punjab AAP chief Aman Arora accused the Chandigarh administration of shielding the accused. “The accused is being driven around in a vehicle registered in the name of the Chandigarh DGP,” Arora alleged, calling it a blatant misuse of power.
Nomination Rejected, High Court Next Stop
Earlier, the Election Commission had rejected Chaturvedi’s Rajya Sabha nomination papers. Following the rejection, Chaturvedi announced his intention to move the High Court.
Meanwhile, Ropar City police registered a case against him late Monday night, prompting a team to initiate arrest proceedings.
Chandigarh Police Refuses Custody Handover
When the Ropar team attempted to take Chaturvedi into custody, Chandigarh Police reportedly objected, stating that he was under their protection. The accused was then escorted to the SP’s office, where further discussions were held between the two forces.
The high-voltage drama has sparked sharp political reactions, with questions being raised over jurisdiction, protocol, and alleged political interference.
