Uttar Pradesh doubles drug inspectors to prevent fake cough syrups and protect public health after recent deaths
UP Steps Up Drug Inspectors After Cough Syrup Tragedy
Following the recent deaths linked to toxic cough syrup, the Uttar Pradesh government has announced plans to double the number of drug inspectors in the state. The move aims to prevent similar incidents and ensure medicines are safe for the public.
Currently, there are only 109 drug inspectors in UP, which is below recommended numbers. The shortage has made it difficult to monitor medicines, including cough syrup, and prevent fake or harmful drugs from reaching consumers.
Transparent Recruitment for Drug Inspectors
The government will hire new inspectors through written exams rather than interviews. This ensures that qualified professionals join the department to strengthen medicine safety.
New Roles to Monitor Cough Syrup and Medicines
In addition to hiring more inspectors, new posts like District Drug Control Officers will be created. These roles will help monitor medicines, including cough syrup, at the local level and take prompt action against violations.
The drug control department will also undergo reforms, including more Deputy Commissioner (Drug) positions and clear promotion rules. These changes aim to provide accountability and stability for inspectors.

Protecting Public Health
By increasing the number of drug inspectors and improving monitoring systems, Uttar Pradesh aims to prevent counterfeit medicines, especially dangerous syrups, from reaching the public. This initiative strengthens overall medicine safety and public health protection.
